Black Expression: From “Milli” to Nelly—Artist Talk with Natasha A. Kelly
Acclaimed Black German academic, artist, and activist Natasha A. Kelly is best known for her multimedia projects focusing on Black German women. One installment of her series is about “Milli,” the Black model of German Expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, who was active in the early decades of the 20th century.
In this filmed lecture, Kelly presents and discusses her recent work, which has been featured at the 10th Berlin Biennale, the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin, and the Kunsthalle Bremen, among other venues. The lecture is an artistic and academic reflection on the social context of German Expressionism from a Black feminist perspective. Decolonizing the Black female body allows for a ...

I know very little about printing … Not exactly what I expected from the title … I thought it was going to be a single block puzzle; as if someone printed from a handmade, wooden jigsaw puzzle. 😂 This was an eye opener. Thanks!

Good interview, but I got coupe things to say, first of all she is an ACTRESS not an actor, so stop beating her up on that 😉, second what was with the audio cut off? I understand things happen but is it cause your in the “art department”? I understand low budget and sh*t, and the “starving artist” but honestly the F@*K homie, talk about a coincidence, and low funds for the art department but damn, should of done fund raiser to get better sh*t, no offense😉, set up an interview at least have everything set up and ready, or rehearse it and make sure sh*t is ready😉, and lastly yes, spaghetti counts, if that is your favorite Paulina, then say that 😉🍝. But yes, good interview and keep it up hope to see more of you and look good keep working out but you have a lot of support… 🇸🇻🤘🏽🤞🏽

I think your horizontally clamped block method would be how he did the cutting. It's much easier to see what you are doing and control the cuts (and keep them vertical). Silversmiths use a similar technique with a fork shaped support where there is no need for a clamp.

Incredible case study of Kirchner’s approach to multi coloured woodblock printing. I’m inspired. I tried a similar process to produce a study of a Japanese woodblock print from the Meiji era of a woman sitting in a hot pool bathing. It is only a two colour print but your video tutorial has provided me the key to understanding three, four, five plus coloured compositions. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and process. Interesting topic but this was a very awkward and disjointed lecture. For instance, I would have liked to learn more about Chinese Trade Painting, and to hear her explain why the topics of this talk are related in an in depth way. We definitely did not need her explaining the basic physiological effects of opioid addiction in a Harvard Art Museum lecture.

Hi again, I had to send this Comment a second Time, because RUclips gets slightly complicated to use sometimes. I was supposed to add the "Timeline Link" to a Section of this Video, but I had forgotten to add it because that Link wasn't available at the Time. Anyway. Here's my Comment for the second Time, I hope I didn't cause any Inconvenience: I "Absolutely LOVE Paulina Alexis and Elizabeth Solomon", for "upholding their Indigenous Native American Roots". I "Especially and Absolutely Love" Elizabeth Solomon's "African-like Features, Demeanor and Speech". You go Girl! 👏🏿 I just have one Enquiry. Would you be able to grant me Permission to screen record this Section of the above Video please? 3:43 I "Absolutely love Elizabeth's Speech", in this Section of the Video and I "can't even put it on Repeat". That's a "little saddening". Moving forward. The Reason I want to put that Section of the Video on Repeat, is because of how "Absolutely POWERFUL it is". This Comment was written with the kindest of Regards

This looks fun, bought a lino carving kit a few years ago and only used it a handful of times but I'm off to try make my mum a Picasso print. Well, mine will not have as many fine lines because I always mess them up somehow. 😂 I also don't have a machine to roll the prints but I'll do it the old fashioned way and stick a few encyclopedias on top for a few seconds and press down. Unless anyone has a better (and cheap) alternative? Hope everyone reading this is well! ❤

I really enjoyed this demonstration. I did note that when cutting out the blue you had to leave the lines for the black. I would have assumed that the blue blob would be just cut out but then you would have lost those black lines. This is a very important point to understand the reduction process. And I just also realised the same goes for the red and yellow. I've learnt a lot from this video, thanks.
